I am considering purchasing a wide format printer for fine-art, photo, and banner printing. After researching it looks like I'm leaning toward the HP Z3100ps 44in over the Epson 9800.
I want to learn more about printing techniques this machine is capable of. Specifically I would llike to learn how to do the wrapped canvas frame technique for giclee fine art.
Anyone out there willing to teach me, or steer me in the direction of a workshop, class, etc. I would be very thankful.

Re: Fine Art Printing Amateur could use some advice
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 4:37 PMYes, I mean I think so. It is a pigment based ink system. "The Vivera inks in the new HP printers are rated by Wilhelm Imaging Research at 200 years for both color and black and white prints."...www.shutterbug.net/equipmen...hpdesign/
The advantage of the pigment based ink system is that pigment inks can print on many types of media.

Sun, February 24, 2008 - 6:20 PMI would research that 200 year claim if I were you. Are you sure it wasn't 20 years ?
Not saying it isn't a good machine, just have to be a little skeptical of boasts that are absolutely unprovable...
And be sure you find out how it responds to WATER (the inks I mean). -

Re: Fine Art Printing Amateur could use some advice
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 8:42 PMYea that is a pretty outrageous claim. I don't know how to find out about what happens when ink meets H2O. If i had to guess it probably ruins the image unless there is some kind of protective coating you can apply. I use an HP to print 4x6 pictures and everytime they've encountered water, it has virtually ruined the pic. I'll contact HP and ask if they sell protective coats for the various media they sell.
While I'm at it,
Does anyone out there own one of these machines?
Either the Epson 9800 or the HP Z3100???
I would give almost anything to pick your brain.
Gratzie~

Re: Fine Art Printing Amateur could use some advice
Sat, April 5, 2008 - 8:00 AMFrom reports in other forums, the inks for that model HP are not colorfast. The other HPs are. Epson is of course. That (Epson) is a huge printer and should be able to do almost anything. I had considered a 44 inch printer until I looked at some images that size. Where will they hang? -
